Kenyans Abroad Rally in Opposition to Ruto Regime

Martin Olage Jun 27, 2024

Kenyans around the globe have united in protesting against the government's proposed Finance Bill 2024.

The protests have ignited across major cities, from Nairobi's bustling centre to the streets of London, Berlin, and beyond. A defining characteristic of this movement is its youthful leadership. United by a shared cause, these urban and multi-ethnic protestors vehemently oppose the proposed tax measures that disproportionately burden ordinary citizens. Their voices resonate through the streets, demanding accountability and a reformed system.

The global nature of these protests underscores their significance. In London, demonstrators draped in Kenyan flags confronted police outside the High Commission, their chants echoing messages of dissent against the government. Outside the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, a sizeable contingent of Kenyans staged a camp, urging the court to reopen a previously dropped case against President William Ruto concerning alleged crimes against humanity during the 2007/2008 post-election violence.

Similarly, unwavering determination marked the rallies held outside the Kenyan Embassy in Berlin and across the United States in cities like Washington and Dallas. These demonstrations reflect a week-long movement applying collective pressure on the government to withdraw the Finance Bill. While the President's recent reversal on the bill may appear as a concession, the unrest persists. Kenyans yearn for more than fleeting policy changes as they seek a system built on accountability and lasting transformation.

The protests extend beyond mere taxation representing a yearning for transparency, equitable representation, and a government that prioritizes the well-being of its people. Ambassadors and high commissioners from various nations have expressed concern over the violence witnessed during some demonstrations. They urge all parties involved to exercise restraint, emphasizing the importance of peaceful dialogue and solutions that hold meaning.
