30-year-old teacher Rebecca Joynes has been found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with two underage students.

The Manchester Crown Court has sentenced Joynes to six-and-a-half years in prison for her actions which involved grooming both boys from the age of 15 through social media platforms. The court heard details of a calculated grooming process initiated by Joynes who had recently ended a long-term relationship. Her behaviour was characterized as flirtatious and she failed to maintain appropriate boundaries with students.

“Well Miss Joynes, there is no doubt this is a crime. Both boys were very much victims, obviously unworldly and vulnerable to the advances from an older attractive woman. You felt buoyed and boosted by their attention. You were the one with the car, the flat, the money, the life experience.” stated Judge Cornell.

Instead of addressing comments regarding the issue, Joynes would reportedly dismiss them with laughter. Joynes provided the schoolboy with all but one digit of her mobile number under the guise of a mathematics exercise. This led to further communication via Snapchat, where flirtatious messages were exchanged. The relationship progressed to secret meetings with Joynes picking up the boy from school and taking him shopping. During one such outing, she purchased a £350 Gucci belt for the boy.

CCTV footage from this shopping trip revealed Joynes' inappropriate body language and eye contact, which the judge deemed evident in her grooming behaviour. The situation culminated in sexual encounters at Joynes' residence. The truth came to light when the boy's mother noticed a suspicious mark on his neck, leading to police involvement and Joynes' subsequent arrest.
