Former Journalist Macharia Gaitho Released After 'Mistaken Identity' Arrest

Former journalist Macharia Gaitho was released this morning after a forceful arrest by armed law enforcement officers.

The incident unfolded as Mr Gaitho was driving with his son near the Karen Police Station where he was suddenly ambushed by armed officers. Eyewitnesses captured a brief video of the altercation, depicting several uniformed and plainclothes individuals forcibly manoeuvring Mr Gaitho into a waiting vehicle. The journalist's daughter Waithera Gaitho recounts that her father was transported to the Karen Police Station where authorities eventually conceded that a case of mistaken identity had occurred.

Mr Gaitho was subsequently released after providing a statement. The Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin later confirmed the incident, characterizing it as a "mistaken identity" matter. The National Police Service has issued a statement acknowledging the erroneous arrest, explaining that their intended target was Francis Gaitho who is currently under investigation.

The statement emphasizes that the Service does not intentionally target journalists and expresses deep regret for the incident, reaffirming its commitment to media collaboration while fulfilling its mandate of promoting accountability and transparency. However, Mr Gaitho contests the police's assertion of mistaken identity. He points out significant discrepancies between himself and the intended target, citing differences in age, residence, and the vehicle he operates.

Francis Gaitho, a prominent figure on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), has stated that he is in consultation with his legal team to determine the appropriate course of action in light of these developments. Macharia Gaitho has expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of concern he has received. He says that he is currently engaged in discussions with his legal counsel to decide on the most appropriate steps moving forward.
