US President Joe Biden Withdraws from 2024 Presidential Race

Martin Olage Jul 21, 2024

President Joe Biden has made the momentous decision to withdraw from his re-election bid, effectively concluding his extensive political career and reshaping the landscape of the upcoming presidential race.

At 81 years old, Biden found himself unable to overcome growing concerns within his party regarding his capacity to serve another term. This had made him increasingly vulnerable to a potential defeat against Donald Trump in November. In a surprising move, Biden has chosen to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the new Democratic nominee, expressing gratitude for her exceptional partnership. The two leaders engaged in a private conversation prior to Biden's public announcement which came unexpectedly at 1:45 pm ET. This decision marks the culmination of Biden's remarkable political journey, spanning over five decades from the fall of Richard Nixon to the rise of Donald Trump.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden said in a statement. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Throughout his career, Biden served as a longtime senator from Delaware, rising to lead influential committees such as Judiciary and Foreign Relations. He also spent eight years as Barack Obama's vice president. The announcement of his withdrawal has elicited various reactions from political figures. California Governor Gavin Newsom praises him as an extraordinary, history-making president who fought for working people and delivered remarkable results. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer lauds Biden as a great public servant and Biden's granddaughter Naomi expresses pride in his service to the country.

The decision of a sitting president to withdraw from the race so close to the party's convention and the general election is unprecedented in modern politics. This situation has created a sense of uncertainty and upheaval within the Democratic Party as it prepares for the upcoming election. Experts describe the current scenario as uncharted territory, with no precedent for a president dropping out or passing away this close to the party's convention. The replacement of the incumbent at the top of the Democratic ticket is likely to spark internal power struggles as ambitious party officials position themselves to become the new standard-bearer.

While the Vice President would seem to be the natural successor, her relatively low approval ratings leave no clear frontrunner to fill the void. The political landscape remains unpredictable with Democratic delegates having more flexibility in their choices at the convention compared to their Republican counterparts. Doubts about Biden's abilities had persisted throughout his term but intensified following his debate with Trump on June 27. His lacklustre performance, combined with declining poll numbers, sparked panic within his own party and raised concerns about his ability to win in November.

Despite attempts to address concerns about his mental acuity through increased public appearances, continued missteps and stagnant poll numbers remained problematic. The 2024 presidential race has been marked by a series of disruptive events making it one of the most chaotic in recent memory. On July 13, Trump narrowly avoided an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. According to political analysts, the former president's resilience in the face of this threat further energized his supporters.
