ODM Leaders Scramble for Key Roles as Senior Members Join Cabinet

Martin Olage Jul 26, 2024

The recent exodus of prominent Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) figures to government positions has ignited a political storm within the party.

Members are now vying for crucial minority leadership roles in the National Assembly following the departures of John Mbadi and Opiyo Wandayi. This has created vacancies for positions such as nominated MP, Minority Leader, and Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee within ODM. The competition for these central roles has sparked intense debates and strategic manoeuvring among party members. Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo has expressed her ambition to lead without being subordinate to anyone.

Meanwhile, Babu Owino, the outspoken representative from Embakasi East, has also entered the fray, showcasing his characteristically assertive political style. Owino, who had previously aspired to chair the Public Appointments Committee before John Mbadi was selected, reiterated his readiness for leadership during a press conference on Thursday, July 25th. Adding to the mix of contenders, Nyando MP Jared Okello has put forward a strong case for Otiende Amollo's candidacy.

Okello argues that Amollo embodies ODM principles and possesses the necessary qualifications to lead the party. He highlights Amollo's seven-year commitment to ODM ideals and his capability to lead the minority side effectively. Okello also emphasizes the importance of fair representation among Luo Nyanza counties, noting that Siaya and Homa Bay are already well-represented in key positions.

The internal competition for ODM positions has intensified amid conflicting viewpoints within the party. This discord has been exacerbated by the appointment of some ODM leaders to Cabinet Secretary positions in the Kenya Kwanza government, a move that has caused significant discontent within the party ranks.
