Kenya to Make History as First African Nation to Headline Germany's Bürgerfest
Kenya is set to make history as the inaugural non-European participant in Germany's esteemed Annual Citizen's Festival, known as Bürgerfest.
This prestigious event, scheduled for September 13th and 14th in Berlin, will offer Kenya a unique platform to showcase its rich culture, strengthen diplomatic ties, and promote tourism, trade, and investment opportunities. The festival, themed "Pamoja - Stronger Together," will mark a significant milestone in cultural diplomacy. For the first time, an African nation will take centre stage in presenting its diverse heritage, culinary delights, music, and economic potential to an anticipated audience of 13,000 attendees from Germany and across Europe.
Kenya's Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Dr Korir Sing'oei reiterates the event's importance as a concrete manifestation of the flourishing Kenya-Germany relations, which span over six decades. He highlights various areas of cooperation including green energy, climate action, digital collaboration, skills development, labour, and peace and security initiatives. The economic implications of this cultural exchange are substantial. Germany, a leading foreign direct investor in Kenya, has over 100 companies operating within the country with investments totalling Sh150 billion. Nairobi hosts the largest global office of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the regional office of Germany's premier trade promotion agency, AHK.
The Bürgerfest presents an ideal opportunity to further strengthen these economic ties and explore new avenues for collaboration. Tourism Principal Secretary John Ololtua emphasizes the role of cultural exchanges in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation. He points to existing initiatives such as the Goethe Institute in Nairobi and the Nairobi International Film Festival as foundations for cultural engagement. Ololtua also notes the significant growth in German tourist arrivals, with 81,359 visitors in the last financial year, representing a 23.2% increase from the previous year.
In addition to the cultural festivities, the event will serve as a backdrop for the signing of a labour agreement between Kenya and Germany. This accord will facilitate the migration of technical and skilled labour from Kenya's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to work in German enterprises, further deepening the ties between the two nations. The Bürgerfest will be held at Schloss Bellevue, the official residence of the German President, and is an annual celebration of cultural diversity that also recognizes the service of German nationals engaged in philanthropic work.
