Governor Kihika: I'm Away on Maternity Leave

Martin Olage Jan 17, 2025

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, age 51, has publicly addressed her two-month absence from the public sphere, confirming she is currently on maternity leave.

Her lack of visibility since November 18, 2024, has prompted considerable speculation and discussion across social media platforms and community forums. In a statement relayed by Dr. Peter Ketyenya, Nakuru County Chief of Staff, Governor Kihika assures residents of her well-being and clarifies the reason for her absence.

"Following numerous inquiries regarding my absence as the elected governor, I want to assure the people of Nakuru that I am well and currently on maternity leave," the statement noted.

She expresses appreciation for the concern shown by the community and affirms that service delivery within the county continues to function effectively under the leadership of Deputy Governor David Kones.
The governor indicates that she plans to resume her official duties "in the next few weeks" at the conclusion of her leave.

Her last public engagement occurred on November 18, during a graduation ceremony for 4,146 students from 33 vocational training centres in Nakuru, where she was accompanied by Deputy Governor Kones and other officials.
During her absence, Deputy Governor Kones has represented the county in various public events.

Notably, Governor Kihika did not attend the celebration of Nakuru City's third anniversary on December 19 at Nyayo Gardens, nor the distribution of Christmas gifts to residents on December 24, events attended by her husband, Sam Mburu, and other county leaders. Throughout this period, the governor’s communications team and family maintained silence regarding her situation, which only heightened public curiosity.

However, with her recent statement, Governor Kihika has alleviated concerns about her absence and reassured residents of her forthcoming return to office.
