A Texas-based Kenyan man is in custody, suspected of fatally shooting his wife in their home on Friday evening, according to the Killeen Police Department.

John Gitau Mwangi, 42, has been arrested in connection with the death of 37-year-old Esther Gitau. Police were dispatched to the couple's residence at 7:15 p.m. for a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers discovered Ms. Gitau with multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene at 9:29 p.m.

"The victim was pronounced deceased at 9:29 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Nicola James," read the police report.

Initial findings from investigators indicate that the shooting stemmed from a domestic violence incident, and authorities have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public. Two young children were present in the house during the incident. They were unharmed and, according to authorities, were not cognizant of the violent events that transpired.

Following an investigation by the Robbery-Homicide Unit, an arrest warrant was issued for Mr Mwangi. He was apprehended at Fort Cavazos, where he was stationed, and is currently detained at the Killeen City Jail. The soldier faces serious charges under Texas law that could result in a life sentence or the death penalty.

This incident comes two months after the arrest of another Kenyan man in the United States in connection with the death of his partner, who was discovered dismembered in a vehicle after being missing for a week. Police in Delaware and Maryland identified the suspect as a person of interest during investigations that suggested a possible love triangle.
