Hostage-taker Shot Dead by FBI After Standoff at California Bank
The incident began on Tuesday afternoon when police received reports of a bomb threat and a man holding people against their will inside the multi-storey bank building.
Authorities immediately closed Bakersfield City Hall, the police headquarters and nearby streets as officers responded to the scene. Police negotiators established telephone contact with the suspect, while SWAT teams, bomb disposal specialists and K9 units were deployed around the building. Law enforcement agencies worked throughout the night in an effort to resolve the situation safely.
Two hostages were released during the first night of negotiations. The remaining captives were freed unharmed on Wednesday before the standoff came to an end.
The Bakersfield Police Department later confirmed that the suspect was killed in what it described as an “officer-involved shooting involving Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel”.
Sergeant Eric Celedon of the Bakersfield Police Department said on Tuesday that “every single resource is at the site’s disposal”, reflecting the scale of the response. Authorities maintained the closure of key civic buildings and surrounding roads while the operation continued.
The bomb threat and hostage situation prompted a coordinated response from local and federal agencies. Investigators have not yet released further details about the suspect or the circumstances that led to the shooting.
