Outrage as Three Friends Killed in Machakos After Watching Champions League Final

Three young men were killed in Machakos after they were attacked by a mob while returning home from watching a football match.

The victims—Kennedy Mutiso, 29, his younger brother Stanley Mutungu, 22, and their friend Charles Mutiso, 25—had spent Saturday evening watching the UEFA Champions League final. According to relatives, they left in good spirits but encountered a violent incident on their way home.

Witnesses said one of the men was struck by a passing vehicle. The group reportedly confronted the driver to seek an explanation. The situation escalated when the driver raised an alarm, accusing them of attempting to rob him.

Boda boda riders and other members of the public gathered at the scene within minutes. Without verification of the claims, the crowd turned on the three men. They were beaten and later set on fire, sustaining severe burns.

Their bodies were taken to a local mortuary, where they remained unidentified for several days. Families searched hospitals and mortuaries before eventually identifying the victims. Post-mortem examinations confirmed that all three died from extensive burn injuries.

Relatives have rejected the allegations made against the victims. Charles Mutiso’s mother said she had travelled with her son from Kiambu shortly before the incident and described the events as incomprehensible. She maintained that her son was not involved in any criminal activity and called for justice.

Authorities have not yet provided a detailed update on the investigation or confirmed any arrests. Families and residents are calling for a prompt and transparent inquiry into the incident.
