Australia-Based Kenyan Leader Emily Korir Demands Answers in Sheila Chebii Death
Members of the Kenyan community in Australia are increasing pressure on authorities to provide answers over the death of Kenyan national Sheila Chebii in Sydney, with community leaders calling for a thorough and transparent investigation.
Leading the campaign is community leader Emily Korir, who has appealed to both Kenyan and Australian officials to ensure Chebii’s family receives a clear account of the circumstances surrounding her death. Korir has written to Kenya’s Ambassador to Australia, Wilson Kogo, and South Australia’s Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Nadia Clancy, urging them to support efforts to secure accountability.
She also called for scrutiny of all institutions connected to the case, including property developer Meriton, saying no organisation should be allowed to avoid examination while questions remain unanswered. The case has become a major concern for many Kenyans living in Australia.
Chebii’s family has repeatedly said they have not received a satisfactory explanation of the events leading to her death, prompting growing calls for transparency and accountability. Those concerns were recently expressed through a peaceful march in Sydney attended by members of the Kenyan diaspora and their supporters.
Organisers described the demonstration as respectful but determined, with participants seeking answers and showing solidarity with Chebii’s family. The march concluded at Meriton.
Following the demonstration, family representatives and community leaders met officers involved in the investigation. Police informed them that there is no evidence supporting claims of self-harm and confirmed that the inquiry remains active. Investigators said all possible circumstances surrounding the death are still being examined.
Police also allowed family members access to a location linked to the case to help them better understand the scope of the investigation. In a development welcomed by the community, a senior officer has been assigned to oversee the inquiry.
The move is expected to strengthen oversight and improve communication as investigations continue. Chebii’s legal team is also expected to receive additional documents that could provide further information about the case.
