Australian Citizen Calls Out Authorities Over Lack of Attention to Sheila Chebii Case
Kenyan student Sheila Chebii was found unresponsive on the balcony of an apartment complex in Sydney, prompting questions about the limited attention her death has received from Australian authorities and mainstream media.
Chebii had recently moved to Australia and was working as a cleaner. Following her death, an Australian social media commentator alleged that the case had not been treated with the level of public attention given to other high-profile incidents.
An Australian content creator known online as Papa Grumps released a video questioning why Chebii’s death had received little coverage. He argued that the response highlighted disparities in how different cases are reported and discussed.
“If that had been a rich white businessman or a celebrity or sports star, it would have been all over the news,” he said. He also questioned the limited public response from police and media organisations, suggesting that the circumstances warranted greater scrutiny.
The video has been widely shared online and has brought renewed focus to Chebii’s case. Papa Grumps’ comments were welcomed by many Kenyans on social media, who thanked him for speaking publicly about Chebii’s death.
Several users said his intervention helped ensure that her story remained visible and encouraged broader discussion of the case. Messages expressing appreciation for his support were widely circulated, with many describing his comments as an important gesture of solidarity.
The debate comes as the Kenyan community in Australia continues to mourn another recent loss. June Chebet Kili, a student at the University of Newcastle, died while receiving treatment at Calvary Mater Hospital.
Kili’s death occurred only weeks before her graduation and was met with grief from her family, friends and fellow students.
