Victims in Mwingi Mass Grave Died from Strangulation, Stabbing and Severe Head Trauma

Martin Olage Jun 16, 2026

Seven bodies exhumed from a suspected mass grave in Mwingi, Kitui County, have been confirmed to have died from violent injuries, according to post-mortem findings.

Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor said autopsies showed that two of the victims were strangled, while another two died from stab wounds to the abdomen. Three others had severe head injuries, indicating they were assaulted before death. In two cases, advanced decomposition prevented a clear determination of the cause of death.

Investigators said the identities of the deceased have not yet been established. No relatives have come forward to identify the bodies. DNA samples have been preserved for analysis, and families with missing persons have been asked to provide samples at Government Chemist offices for comparison. Toxicology tests are also being carried out to establish whether any substances contributed to the deaths.

The grave site in Mwingi Town is under investigation amid concerns that the area may have been used repeatedly to dispose of murder victims. Similar discoveries in recent weeks have led to increased concern among residents and calls for more intensive security operations and investigations.

Authorities have said efforts are continuing to identify the victims and trace those responsible for the killings, as forensic work and police inquiries progress.
