Kenya Advances Mwalimu Majuu Programme to Connect Teachers with Global Jobs
Kenya is moving ahead with the implementation of the Mwalimu Majuu policy framework, a government programme aimed at helping teachers secure employment opportunities abroad while protecting their rights and welfare.
The initiative was the focus of a consultative meeting between the State Department for Diaspora Affairs and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Principal Secretary Roseline Kathure Njogu met a TSC delegation led by Chairperson Dr Jamleck Muturi John and Acting Chief Executive Officer Eveleen Mitei to discuss the next phase of implementation.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the two institutions, developing practical measures for rolling out the framework, and ensuring that overseas recruitment is conducted in an ethical and transparent manner. Officials said the programme is intended to position Kenyan teachers as competitive professionals in international labour markets.
It seeks to connect qualified educators with employers abroad while ensuring that their rights, working conditions and welfare are protected. Participants also highlighted the broader economic and professional benefits of the initiative.
The government expects the programme to support knowledge exchange, increase diaspora remittances and strengthen Kenya’s standing as a source of skilled education professionals. International work experience is also expected to contribute to teachers’ professional growth.
The meeting was attended by Ambassador Isaiya Kabira, Secretary for Diaspora Investments, Skills and Entrepreneurship, and Irene Karari, Director of the Skills and Expertise Division, together with other senior officials. The TSC delegation also included Clement Kabuti, Antonina Lentoijoni and Raymond Mureithi.
