Hinga Assures Kenyans Affordable Homes Are Safe Regardless of 2027 Election Outcome

Martin Olage Jun 19, 2026

Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga has assured Kenyans that homes acquired through the Affordable Housing Programme cannot be taken away because of a change in government after the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on 18 June, Hinga dismissed claims by opposition leaders that beneficiaries of the programme could lose their homes if a new administration assumes power. He said the initiative is protected by law and guarantees full ownership rights to buyers.

“These are homeowners and homeowners by right. Any homeowner who wants to buy these houses should do so confidently,” he said.

His remarks come amid increasing political debate over the housing programme, with some opposition figures urging Kenyans not to invest in the scheme. Hinga described such warnings as misleading and accused critics of using the project for political purposes.

He argued that an excessive focus on the next election risks distracting from efforts to address the country's housing shortage and improve living conditions for many Kenyans. Hinga also criticised leaders who previously supported affordable housing but have since changed their position.

He accused wealthy politicians of hypocrisy, saying they were opposing a programme designed to help low and middle-income families access decent housing while enjoying comfortable homes themselves.

“This person who is living in this house here has one toilet. You, your house has got six toilets. What business do you have fighting somebody who can at least say I have diligently used one toilet?” he said.

The Principal Secretary said the programme aims to provide affordable and dignified housing to Kenyans who might otherwise continue living in informal settlements. He warned that discouraging people from participating in the initiative could limit opportunities for families seeking better living conditions.

His assurance comes as major projects under the programme continue to advance, including the Mukuru Housing Estate, which has already delivered thousands of housing units. Hinga said the legal protections surrounding the scheme should give prospective buyers confidence that their investments are secure.
