Kenya Tightens Ebola Screening for Travellers from DRC and Uganda

Martin Olage Jun 23, 2026

Kenya has introduced new health screening requirements for travellers arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda as part of efforts to prevent the importation of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

In a diplomatic notice issued through the Kenyan embassy in Angola, the government stated that passengers travelling from or transiting through the two countries must complete electronic health surveillance forms before entering Kenya. Airports have also been instructed to conduct temperature screening, with travellers recording temperatures above 38°C referred for further assessment.

At Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, airlines have been directed to ensure passengers complete the required surveillance forms before departure. Carriers must also provide passenger manifests and health declarations to Port Health Officers when requested.

The Ministry of Health has instructed medical facilities to respond immediately to suspected Ebola cases. Guidance issued to hospitals states that patients showing possible symptoms should be isolated without delay, regardless of whether travel history has been confirmed or laboratory results are available.

“Do not wait for travel history confirmation or laboratory results before initiating isolation. Patients may not volunteer their history or may be too ill to provide it. ISOLATE FIRST,” the advisory said.

The measures come as Kenya seeks to strengthen disease surveillance at key entry points. The country handles significant cross-border movement through Busia, Malaba, Suam and Namanga border posts, as well as through JKIA.

Health authorities say the new requirements are intended to improve early detection and reduce the risk of Ebola entering the country through international and regional travel.
