Kenyan Woman in US Military Reaches Dream of American Citizenship
Kenyan-born US Army service member Mercy May Jerono has officially become a United States citizen after taking the oath of citizenship, marking a significant milestone in her personal and professional journey.
Originally from Kapkatet in Kericho County, Jerono enlisted in the US Army as a non-citizen and completed the rigorous training and service required of military personnel. Her naturalisation marks her transition to full US citizenship after years of military service and commitment.
Images of Jerono in her Army uniform were widely shared on social media, where many Kenyans and members of the diaspora congratulated her on the achievement. The response reflected admiration for her determination and the path she followed to reach citizenship through military service.
Her experience also highlights the role military service can play in the US naturalisation process. Permanent residents and certain categories of non-citizens are eligible to enlist in the US Armed Forces, although citizenship can provide access to additional career opportunities and security clearances.
Jerono’s achievement forms part of a broader pattern of Kenyans building successful careers in the United States across sectors including healthcare, technology, business and public service. Another Kenyan woman, Sheryl, recently shared her experience of becoming a US citizen after starting her immigration journey on a fiancé visa.
She encouraged others pursuing citizenship to remain persistent despite challenges.
