Kenyan national Josef Otieno Auma Oduwo, who died in Australia last month, has been laid to rest at his ancestral home in Seme, Kisumu County, following the successful repatriation of his remains from Melbourne.

Josef died peacefully in his sleep on 27 May after a brief illness. His funeral programme began with a memorial service at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi on 24 June, where family members, friends and colleagues gathered to pay tribute to his life. The service was attended by mourners from Kenya, Australia and other countries.

In a public message, Josef's brother, Dr Noah Akala Oduwo, thanked those who supported the family during the repatriation process. He expressed appreciation for the prayers, financial contributions and professional assistance that helped return Josef's body to Kenya within a short period.

Dr Oduwo also thanked Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir for his support in facilitating the process. Josef had established a respected life within the Kenyan community in Melbourne.

Friends and members of the diaspora described him as a generous and compassionate professional whose leadership and kindness had a lasting impact on those around him. His death also highlighted the practical and emotional challenges families face when a loved one dies abroad and the importance of community support during such circumstances.

He was the son of Eng. George Oduwo Nyangasi and Dr Rispah Oduwo. He is survived by his daughter, Ah-Reum Auma Choi Oduwo, whom he shared with Sunjae Choi. He also leaves behind his siblings, Elizabeth Akoth Oduwo, Dr Paul Nyangasi Oduwo and Dr Noah Akala Oduwo.

The family said Josef would be remembered for his humility, generosity and commitment to serving others. They also asked for continued prayers for his daughter, parents and everyone affected by his passing.
