Malala Backs Sifuna for Deputy President as Gachagua Receives Campaign Prado
Cleophas Malala has called on the opposition alliance to reserve the deputy presidential position for the Western region, while Rigathi Gachagua has received a Toyota Prado from supporters in Meru to support his nationwide political tours.
Malala, the deputy leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), said the Luhya community is seeking recognition through the second-highest office rather than the presidency. Speaking at a political forum, he named Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as his preferred choice for deputy president, describing him as a strong representative of the region.
He added that if Sifuna is not selected, other leaders from the Western region, including Eugene Wamalwa, should be considered. Malala said excluding the region from the position could lead to renewed calls for a presidential candidate from Western Kenya. His remarks highlight the negotiations taking place within the opposition as leaders work towards forming a united ticket for the 2027 General Election.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa have all been linked to the coalition. However, the alliance has not announced either its presidential candidate or running mate.
Meanwhile, Gachagua received a new Toyota Prado from businessman and lawyer Mugambi Imanyara. Imanyara said the vehicle was a gift from the people of Meru to support Gachagua's extensive travels across the country as he builds support ahead of the next election.
The vehicle was dedicated by a pastor before Gachagua accepted the keys and thanked the donors for their support. Imanyara said the donation was partly prompted by earlier incidents in which Gachagua's vehicles were damaged, adding that the Meru community remained firmly behind him.
Since leaving government, Gachagua has held rallies and consultative meetings across the Mt Kenya region, Western, Rift Valley, Coast, Eastern and Nairobi. His engagements have strengthened his ties with other opposition leaders as they continue discussions on forming a united coalition to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 election.
