LeBron James Confirms Philadelphia 76ers Will Be His Final NBA Team
LeBron James has confirmed that he will end his NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers, signing what he says will be the final contract of his career after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers.
The announcement brings an end to weeks of speculation over Lebron's future. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Miami Heat had all been linked with the four-time NBA champion. In a statement shared on social media, Lebron said: “I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energise a new fanbase and start this incredible journey one last time.”
The statement makes clear that he intends to finish his career in Philadelphia while pursuing another NBA title. Lebron leaves the Lakers after eight seasons, during which he won the 2020 NBA championship. The 41-year-old remains the league's all-time leading scorer and has extended one of the longest and most successful careers in NBA history.
Selected first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2003 NBA Draft, Lebron built his career across several teams. He returned to Cleveland for a second spell and led the franchise to its first NBA championship in 2016. During four seasons with the Miami Heat, he won two league titles before moving to Los Angeles in 2018.
Speculation over a possible return to Miami briefly increased this week after the Heat accidentally published a video link referring to an introductory press conference for Lebron. The post was quickly removed. Responding to the incident, James said: “Miami I’ll forever love and Northeast Ohio will always be home,” recognising the places that played a significant role in his career.
Alongside his four NBA championships, Lebron won the league's Most Valuable Player award four times between 2009 and 2013. He has also been selected for a record 22 NBA All-Star Games, reflecting his sustained performance over more than two decades.
For the 76ers, the signing adds one of the most accomplished players in NBA history to a team that has consistently competed for a championship in recent seasons. Lebron brings extensive experience and a proven record of success, although he joins the club at the final stage of his playing career.
Lebron has won NBA championships with three different franchises and remained one of the sport's leading figures throughout his career. His move to Philadelphia will mark the final chapter of a career that has spanned more than 20 years, with attention now focused on whether he can help the 76ers compete for another NBA title.
