NTSA Launches Nationwide Alcoblow Operations to Curb Reckless Driving

Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has intensified enforcement against reckless driving, with nationwide drink-driving checks and broader road safety operations beginning on 27 June ahead of the busy holiday travel season.

The authority said officers have been deployed on major highways and at bus terminals to carry out widespread alcoblow operations. Roadside breathalyser tests are central to the exercise, which targets motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. NTSA said impaired driving remains a major cause of fatal road crashes and that enforcement will be strengthened during the holiday period.

The campaign also targets other high-risk offences, including speeding, dangerous overtaking and driving against the flow of traffic. NTSA has also identified driver fatigue as a growing safety concern, particularly among long-distance drivers. It has urged transport companies to ensure their drivers are properly rested before undertaking long journeys.

The operation began with public awareness activities in Mombasa and is being carried out in partnership with county governments, NTSA regional offices and the National Police Service. The awareness sessions are aimed at drivers and passengers to reinforce the importance of responsible road use. Passengers have also been encouraged to report reckless driving through the emergency numbers 999, 911 and 112.

The enforcement campaign comes as schools prepare to close for the August holidays, when NTSA expects an increase in travel involving children. Alongside the alcoblow operations, the authority is continuing its "Operation Watoto Wafike Salama" campaign, which focuses on matatus, school buses and school vans to improve the safety of young passengers.

NTSA said the campaign combines law enforcement with public education to improve road safety. In addition to drink-driving, it addresses risks linked to fatigue, distraction and poor driving discipline.

The authority said the campaign is intended to improve compliance with traffic laws and encourage safer driving during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
