Gladys Chepkoech graduated from a leading university in the United Kingdom at the age of 41 after completing her studies while undergoing treatment for four separate cancer diagnoses and raising her children.

Chepkoech decided to study abroad to improve her career opportunities and provide a better future for her family. Moving to a new country marked the beginning of an important chapter in her life, but her studies soon coincided with a series of serious health challenges.

During her time at university, she was diagnosed with cancer on four separate occasions. Each diagnosis required treatment and recovery, adding to the demands of university life. Despite these setbacks, she continued with her studies and remained committed to completing her degree.

Her academic schedule often had to fit around hospital appointments and treatment. She attended lectures whenever possible, completed coursework despite the physical effects of treatment, and prepared for examinations during periods of recovery. She continued working towards her qualification throughout each stage of her illness.

Chepkoech said her children were her main source of motivation. She wanted to show them that difficult circumstances do not have to prevent people from achieving their goals. She viewed every challenge as another reason to continue pursuing her education.

When she graduated, the ceremony marked the end of years of study, medical treatment and personal sacrifice. Her degree represented both her academic achievement and her determination to complete her education despite serious health problems.

Reflecting on her experience, Chepkoech said: “There were moments when I felt exhausted and uncertain, but I remembered why I started. I wanted my children to know that no matter how difficult life becomes, we must never give up. Every challenge became another reason to keep believing.”
