Aisha Jumwa Quits UDA Ahead of 2027 General Election

Former Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa has announced that she has left the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), ending her association with President William Ruto’s ruling party ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Jumwa made the announcement at her home in Malindi on Thursday, saying the decision followed "deep reflection, heartfelt prayer and countless consultations". She said she could no longer remain in UDA, citing frustrations over her unsuccessful bid for the Kilifi governorship, unfulfilled political commitments and what she described as the party’s declining support along the Coast.

Her departure is notable because she was among UDA’s founding members and one of President Ruto’s strongest supporters during the party’s early years. Before joining the Cabinet, she served as the MP for Malindi and was Kilifi County’s first Woman Representative.

Jumwa’s political career has included several high-profile developments in recent years. She was removed from the Cabinet in July 2024 during the Gen Z-led protests. She was later appointed chairperson of the Kenya Roads Board, but the High Court overturned the appointment in May 2026, ending her tenure.

Her resignation comes as UDA faces a series of high-profile defections. Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, Nyandarua Governor Moses Kiarie Badilisha and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro have all recently left the party, highlighting growing divisions within its ranks.

In Kilifi, Jumwa’s exit is expected to influence the county’s political landscape, where UDA has struggled to strengthen its support. She said she will announce her next political move, indicating that she intends to remain active in the race for the county’s leadership and could align with a new political formation.
