Kenya Moves to Boost Diaspora Investment in Nairobi Securities Exchange

Martin Olage Aug 07, 2026

The State Department for Diaspora Affairs has begun formal discussions with the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) to increase participation by Kenyans living abroad in the country's capital markets.

The meeting was chaired by Ambassador Ann Wanjohi, Director of the Liaison and Partnership Division at the department, and attended by senior NSE officials Jackson Kiminje and Faith Mwende. The discussions focused on ways to channel diaspora remittances into long-term investments that support economic growth, rather than limiting them to household spending.

Financial literacy emerged as a key priority during the talks. Officials said many Kenyans living abroad are not fully aware of the investment opportunities available in Kenya, making it more difficult for them to make informed financial decisions. The department and the NSE aim to improve access to information so that more members of the diaspora can invest with confidence.

Technology was also identified as an important part of the plan. As many Kenyans abroad cannot visit local financial institutions in person, digital platforms are expected to make it easier to access capital market products. Officials said remote access could expand the number of investors while strengthening confidence in Kenya's financial markets.

The discussions also considered the development of investment products designed specifically for the diaspora. Such products would reflect the different needs of Kenyans living abroad and support the government's efforts to increase their participation in national development.

The engagement reflects the growing importance of the diaspora to Kenya's economy. Remittances remain one of the country's largest and most reliable sources of foreign exchange, and policymakers are seeking ways to direct more of these funds into investments that contribute to long-term economic growth.
