Sifuna Seeks Oparanya’s Blessing as Linda Mwananchi Steps Up 2027 Campaign

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has asked former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya to endorse his political journey as the Linda Mwananchi movement stepped up its grassroots campaign in Western Kenya.

Speaking to supporters in Sabatia on Saturday, Sifuna described Oparanya as a mentor who had guided him through the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and asked for his support as he pursues a broader political role.

“Oparanya, I respect you greatly, but today I have come to Sabatia to ask for your vote. If you support Sifuna, we will not lose,” he told the crowd.

Sifuna said he was seeking Oparanya’s moral support rather than financial assistance.

“I am asking you to bless me as I embark on this journey, even if you do not agree with me. Just your blessing, not money. I am not asking you for anything else. I know you, too, hear the cries of the people,” he said.

Oparanya remains an influential figure in Western Kenya politics. He served two terms as Kakamega governor and was ODM deputy party leader before joining President William Ruto’s Cabinet.

His name has also been mentioned as a possible running mate for President Ruto. ODM National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has publicly backed Oparanya for the position, citing his administrative experience and influence in the region.

Sifuna spoke as the Linda Mwananchi team intensified its mobilisation campaign in Kakamega. He was accompanied by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale.

The team began its engagements in Sabatia before proceeding to Isulu and Shinyalu markets. A major rally was scheduled for Kakamega’s Central Business District later on Saturday.

The group held similar meetings in Busia on Friday as it expanded its grassroots campaign across Western Kenya. Linda Mwananchi is seeking to build support in areas that have traditionally backed ODM while presenting itself as a counterweight to President Ruto’s administration. Its leaders have said the movement aims to address the concerns of ordinary citizens and strengthen their voice ahead of the 2027 general election.

The campaign has brought together leaders from different political backgrounds, with the movement seeking to build a wider support base in the region. Sifuna’s appeal to Oparanya reflects the importance of established political figures in efforts to build support ahead of the 2027 election. By seeking Oparanya’s blessing, he also acknowledged the former governor’s continued influence in Western Kenya.

Oparanya’s response could affect both Sifuna’s political ambitions and Linda Mwananchi’s efforts to establish itself as a significant political force ahead of the election. The Kakamega tour forms part of the movement’s broader effort to bring together established leaders and grassroots supporters as it seeks to expand its political presence in Western Kenya.
