Tom Ochieng Atonga Steps Down as Chairman of Kenyans in Botswana Diaspora Association

Tom Ochieng Atonga has stepped down as chairman of the Kenyans in Botswana Diaspora Association (KEBODIA) after a tenure that strengthened the organisation’s structure and role within the Kenyan community in Botswana.

Atonga, who has roots in Migori and Homa Bay, studied at the University of Nairobi before moving to Botswana in 2004. He built a career in higher education while also working to support Kenyans living in the country.

During his tenure, KEBODIA developed from a largely social association into a more structured organisation that supported members during times of crisis, strengthened ties with local Batswana communities and provided a platform for philanthropic activities. Atonga also worked closely with the Kenya High Commission in Botswana on issues affecting the diaspora.

He advocated for improved consular services and practical solutions to administrative challenges facing Kenyans living in the country. His leadership reflected the growing role of diaspora organisations in Kenya’s development and international engagement. Diaspora leaders are increasingly involved in initiatives that support their communities abroad while maintaining links with Kenya.

Atonga’s decision to step down was presented as part of a planned leadership transition aimed at allowing KEBODIA to respond to the changing needs of its members. The incoming officials take over an organisation strengthened by years of work under his leadership.

His farewell gathering in Gaborone was attended by members of the Kenyan diaspora and officials from the Kenya High Commission. The event recognised his contribution to KEBODIA and highlighted the organisation’s role in supporting Kenyans abroad while strengthening ties between Kenya and Botswana.

Atonga’s tenure demonstrates how diaspora associations can serve both as support networks for their members and as platforms for cultural, social and economic engagement. The structures established during his leadership are expected to continue supporting the Kenyan community in Botswana and contributing to Kenya’s wider engagement with its diaspora.
