The Kenyan military on Monday engaged in intensive training exercises with the United Kingdom's Royal Marines, strengthening their partnership in maritime security operations.
Approximately 42 Royal Marine officers provided practical demonstrations to the Kenyan Navy, focusing on strategies to combat piracy and smuggling. The Kenya Marine Commando Unit (KMCU) participated in visit, board, search, and seizure exercises as part of new counter-terrorism tactics. British High Commissioner to Kenya Neil Wigan emphasizes the importance of this training and highlights the ongoing commitment between the two nations to develop a robust and adaptable military force. The collaboration is part of a five-year initiative aimed at establishing a self-sustaining training cycle for the Kenyan Navy, enabling them to independently train their officers in the future.
The first cohort of Kenyan Marines completed their rigorous training program in May 2023. This program closely mirrored the training undertaken by the Royal Marines in their efforts to curb piracy. Commander Chris Sharp of the Royal Navy noted that the visit to Kenya provided an excellent opportunity for the Royal Marines to engage in joint boarding operation exercises with the Kenyan Navy. The UK-Kenya military partnership coincides with Kenya's recent announcement of a collaboration with the United States to construct a defence college. President William Ruto expressed gratitude for the US government's support in addressing the future needs of students at this new facility.
The training exercises were conducted during a visit by HMS Lancaster, a British Royal Navy Frigate, to Kenya. This visit not only facilitated the training but also reinforced the joint commitment of the UK and Kenya to enhancing regional stability and security. The creation of the KMCU and the ongoing training programs are expected to significantly bolster Kenya's maritime security capabilities. The United States has also played a crucial role in the development of the KMCU by providing equipment and ensuring that this specialist force is equipped to the highest standard.
