Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly criticized President William Ruto's recent Cabinet reshuffles, emphasizing the need for a renewed focus on development and the fulfillment of campaign promises.
Gachagua's comments come against a backdrop of increasing public dissatisfaction with the Kenya Kwanza administration, particularly concerning its responses to high-profile issues, including corruption, unemployment, and escalating living costs. In remarks made on Sunday, Gachagua expressed concern that President Ruto has prioritized political appeasement over addressing the pressing needs of the nation.
He argues that the Kenyan populace is seeking concrete improvements in areas such as infrastructure, education access, and the affordability of essential goods, rather than political appointments that serve only a select few. Gachagua's statements follow Ruto's decision to integrate opposition figures, notably those associated with former President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga, into his Cabinet.
Since assuming office in 2022, Ruto has executed three Cabinet reshuffles, bringing in allies from various regions, including Nyanza, Western, and Coast. The most recent reshuffle welcomed former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, former Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui, and former Governor William Kabogo into the fold. While Ruto aims to foster national unity through these appointments, Gachagua argues that the President's approach reflects a lack of a coherent governance vision.
He posits that simply reshuffling Cabinet positions does little to address public perceptions, especially among constituents in Central Kenya, who prioritize development over political maneuvering. Moreover, in a strategic move to consolidate power, Ruto has recently expanded the responsibilities of key Cabinet Secretaries. Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi now oversees the Information, Communication, and Technology, as well as the Digital Economy portfolios.
Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has been assigned the Agriculture Ministry, and Salim Mvurya, who has moved to the Sports docket, also now manages the Trade Ministry. During a visit to the home of former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala in Mumias, Gachagua expressed that the public continues to demand substantial developmental initiatives rather than mere political reshuffles.
Together with DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa and Malala, Gachagua has challenged President Ruto to take immediate action regarding the issue of abductions, which have incited national outrage. The former DP has issued a 72-hour ultimatum for the release of individuals allegedly abducted by security agents, threatening mass protests scheduled for January 2, 2025, if no action is taken.
