Kenya and the United Nations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bolster the development of Konza Technopolis.
Konza is a planned smart city located south of Nairobi. This agreement signifies a strategic partnership between Kenya and the UN aiming to leverage the expertise of various UN agencies based in Nairobi. UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya Stephen Jackson highlights the MoU's potential to foster collaboration and identify areas where UN agencies can contribute to the success of Konza Technopolis and Kenya's broader development goals.
This alignment will support both Kenya's Vision 2030 and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Konza Technopolis CEO John Paul Okwiri elaborates on specific areas of collaboration. The partnership with the UN Human Settlements Program will enable knowledge exchange and benchmarking with other smart cities. This will encompass joint research, data sharing, and the implementation of local environmental initiatives such as greening projects. Additionally, collaboration with the UN Development Program will see technical and financial assistance provided to over 20 innovators, empowering them to commercialize their products and enter the market.
“This MOU provides us with a collaborative platform whereby we bring our strengths and unite for a common good,” said Konza CEO John Paul Okwiri.
The MoU also paves the way for strategic partnerships in developing programs based on the Kenya Innovation Ecosystem Mapping. Beyond the UN's involvement, the Konza Technopolis project has garnered international support. The Cultural Organization and the Chinese Association of Natural Science Museums are joining forces to establish and operate the Konza Natural Science Museum. This collaborative effort will include resource mobilization to ensure the museum's successful development.
