Silvia Jemutai Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army

Kenyan-born officer Silvia Jemutai has been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army during a ceremony held on 14 November at Fort Lee, Virginia.

Jemutai, who grew up in Kopsiya, Poror in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County, marked the occasion with family and friends who travelled from across the United States and Kenya. She dedicated the promotion to her late mother, Jacqueline Alice Kirui, whom she described as a source of strength and guidance.

She also thanked her family, mentors, peers and soldiers for their support and said she intends to continue leading with integrity while mentoring younger officers.

The rank of Lieutenant Colonel is a key step in an officer’s career.

Positioned between Major and Colonel, it is usually reached after 16 to 22 years of service and requires strong performance, professional military education and substantial operational experience. Officers at this level often command battalions of 300 to 1,000 soldiers, managing training, readiness and mission execution. In staff roles, they serve as senior advisers or executive officers in higher headquarters, contributing to the planning and coordination of major operations.

Promotion to this rank is competitive and reflects an officer’s leadership, judgement and ability to manage both mission requirements and the welfare of soldiers. Lieutenant Colonels are also expected to influence doctrine and strategy through joint assignments and advanced study, shaping the Army’s long-term leadership and operational approach.

Jemutai’s achievement carries significance beyond the United States. The Kenya Defence Forces assign similar responsibilities to officers of the same rank, including unit command and participation in strategic planning. Her promotion highlights the shared military values of discipline, leadership and service across both nations.

For Kenyans interested in joining the US Army, lawful permanent residency, typically obtained through family sponsorship, employment-based applications or the Diversity Visa lottery, is required. Applicants must meet age guidelines, generally between 17 and 34, hold a secondary school qualification and demonstrate English proficiency through the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB).

They must also satisfy medical and fitness standards before undertaking Basic Combat Training and later Advanced Individual Training for their chosen speciality. Those living outside the United States can seek guidance from US embassies and consulates.
