Gachagua Missing at Raila’s State Funeral as Political Leaders Unite

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was notably absent from the State Funeral of Raila Odinga at Nyayo National Stadium on 17 October, prompting widespread political speculation over his decision not to attend.

The event brought together leaders from across Kenya’s political spectrum, reflecting Odinga’s long-standing influence on the country’s democratic journey. Opposition figures including Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and Justin Muturi were in attendance, alongside President William Ruto, who led the government delegation.

Gachagua’s absence went unexplained, with no statement issued by his office before or after the ceremony. The timing carried particular significance, coinciding with the first anniversary of Gachagua’s impeachment as Deputy President.

His history with Odinga has been defined by sharp political rivalry and contrasting ideologies. During the 2022 General Election, Gachagua campaigned as Ruto’s running mate under the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, while Odinga led the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya coalition.

Their exchanges during the campaign were marked by hostility, with Gachagua describing Odinga as a “State project” backed by then-President Uhuru Kenyatta, and positioning himself as an advocate for the “hustler nation” and Mt Kenya region.

Following Ruto’s victory and the Supreme Court’s confirmation of the results, tensions between the two figures deepened. In 2023, Odinga led nationwide demonstrations over economic concerns and alleged electoral irregularities.

Gachagua, serving as Deputy President at the time, accused him of seeking power through backroom deals similar to the 2018 “handshake” with Kenyatta. Odinga, in turn, criticised Gachagua’s regional rhetoric, particularly his repeated emphasis on Mt Kenya’s political weight.

By late 2024, the political landscape had shifted significantly. Gachagua was removed from office through impeachment, while Odinga entered a partnership with President Ruto, marking a notable realignment of alliances.

Analysts have suggested this reversal of roles may have influenced Gachagua’s decision to skip the funeral, particularly given Ruto’s presence as the head of state.

Despite not attending, Gachagua issued a condolence message describing Odinga as a “patriot” and “champion of democracy.”
