Jubilee Senator Earns Praise from Kenyans after Securing Release of MP Babu Owino

John Wanjohi Jan 22, 2018

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has received praise from Kenyans on social media for managing to negotiate the release of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who was held at the Parklands police cells for two nights.

The youthful MP was arrested outside Parliament premises on Friday by Flying Squad officers for reportedly assaulting a parking attendant in the Westlands area on January 11th.

Despite being elected on a Jubilee ticket, Sakaja harshly criticized the police for ‘targeting’ Babu. He camped at the police station for several hours on Sunday to secure his release.

Speaking to the media after negotiating Babu's release, Sakaja said: “Whoever is trying to use the criminal justice system to score whichever goals, should stop. And if you are in the police force and you think by doing this you are helping Jubilee, you are not."

“Babu pole sana together with your bodyguard. As soon as I got the information from one of your people I was able to dash over here,” he told Owino.

Sakaja secured his release after similar attempts on Saturday by Nasa leaders Raila Odinga, Moses Wetang'ula, MPs allied to opposition and University of Nairobi students bore no fruits.

Its this action that has made Sakaja win praise from a section of Kenyans in the internet. Here are some of the reactions.

Babu was on Monday charged with three counts of assault, use of abusive language and causing disturbance, but was freed on Sh20,000 personal bond after denying the charges.
