Governor Mike Sonko Holds Cabinet Meetings at His Rural Home after Fleeing Nairobi

John Wanjohi May 22, 2018

Governor Mike Sonko is now running Nairobi from his rural home in Mua Hills, Machakos County for what he says is over fear for his life.

The move comes after the government reduced his bodyguards from 26 to 5 last week, in the ongoing mass withdrawal of police officers attached to VIPs.

The Star reports that Governor Sonko held his first Cabinet meeting at his residence in Machakos on Monday and a second one on Tuesday.

Photos of Sonko and his team emerged after the Monday meeting. A CEC said the Governor summoned them to Machakos for a meeting on Sunday evening.

“We don't know, but the governor asked us to be here,” he told the Star.

On Friday, Sonko said he had retreated to his Mua Hills home, where he feels 'a bit safe' after alleged attempts on his life. The Governor said that trouble begun after he called Nairobi police boss to inform him that he was being trailed.

"My troubles started when I called Nairobi police boss Mr Kamwende and told him I want to write a statement against this one man who has threatened to eliminate me," Sonko said.

"I have to cut down on my movements. This is a serious threat to my life because of this one man and his cartels," the governor added.
