Retired President Mwai Kibaki has returned to the country following a three-week medical trip to London, United Kingdom.

Kibaki undergoing a routine medical checkup in a London-based hospital and jetted back to the country on Tuesday, reports The Standard.

A source within the family told the newspaper that the medical trip was kept a secret to avoid any panic, adding that it was nothing serious but a mere routine checkup.

“Mwai Kibaki departed from the country on the last Saturday of August for treatment in London. It was for a checkup, having gone through surgery before, and the family felt there was no need to make it public because there was no cause for alarm,” the family source was quoted by the Standard.

“He was in very high spirits and sustained hearty conversation with all family members," added the source.

Kibaki has maintained a low profile since he left office in 2013 unlike his predecessor Daniel arap Moi who continues to host political delegations at his rural home in Kabarak, Nakuru County.

In 2016, Kibaki was flown to Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in South Africa where a blood clot in one of his veins was reportedly removed.
