Retired President Mwai Kibaki has returned to the country following a three-week medical trip to London, United Kingdom.
Kibaki undergoing a routine medical checkup in a London-based hospital and jetted back to the country on Tuesday, reports The Standard.
A source within the family told the newspaper that the medical trip was kept a secret to avoid any panic, adding that it was nothing serious but a mere routine checkup.
“Mwai Kibaki departed from the country on the last Saturday of August for treatment in London. It was for a checkup, having gone through surgery before, and the family felt there was no need to make it public because there was no cause for alarm,” the family source was quoted by the Standard.
“He was in very high spirits and sustained hearty conversation with all family members," added the source.
Kibaki has maintained a low profile since he left office in 2013 unlike his predecessor Daniel arap Moi who continues to host political delegations at his rural home in Kabarak, Nakuru County.
In 2016, Kibaki was flown to Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in South Africa where a blood clot in one of his veins was reportedly removed.

I hoped you focused on building hospitals in Kenya when you were Presiden. Now look how your family is rushing you from country to country seeking treatment while we have capable young men in Kenya who can be world class doctors.
@ imara, good point. Dont out mefical graduates, and practitioners learn the same material? If its buying latest equipment, what is stopping us.Now aguy who could have done something about it runs to UK.When are we going to stop this trend?.We all want to live rich or poor. And we depend on government to make our basic needs affordable to all irrespective of their bank accounts. And that the government for the people. All people.
I see when politicians get sick in DC. They go to the nearest hospital in DC. Why can't Kenya politicians go to the nearest hospital in Nairobi. Their looted money is a curse
Can the family of jambazi Kibaki clarify the panic and alarm reasons of secrecy to the visit?Who cares when a thief dies?Jambazi Kibaki should just explain why all his looted wealth has failed to cure him.Why loot if the mall, maize,KPC petrol,Anglolishing,KKV etc can't cure you?
When he was president of Kenya he failed to improve health care for the benefit of all Kenyans.
Since he has money and prestige he can afford to travel to London for checkups. Most folks in kenya however can't afford that.
The interesting part of life is that he will end up getting a myocardial infarction right here in Kenya, and since he didn't equip hospitals to manage such, rushing to London/joburg won't help him.
Unless he has a functional icu/cathlab right inside his vast palaces/houses.
@Jalam I said it correctly. This Africans leaders r fools juu why don’t they fix healthcare systems fix our hospitals pay the doctors n nurses well so when they get sick they just go to the nearest hospital.Thats why I always state black pple we cursed whether ur educated or not.Everyrhing we rush to the west.Have u heard leaders in the USA uk going to another country or even coming to Africa to b treated.Anyway as Mungai Wa Njoroge sang his new songs this leaders will continue to die hata waende India or uk or USA.Bure kabisa. They need to fix the healthcare system n Atleast Uhuru is trying his best.

@ mkenya Halisi, you and I have wrestled with this issue for sometime on this forum;" Is mwafrika inherently inferior".Some of the decisions they make(our leaders) make one wonder.
Surely, does it not make sense to bring up your institutions to the standard you want so that you dont have to go many miles to get what that institution offers; be it education,or health...
Let me ask you this @Mkenya Halisi. If there is a debate to bring back mzungu to rule us and run our institutions,or even our country, the way he runs his, would you go for it?Lets say with 85% of efficiency.
@maxiley am a very patriotic african.Yes white pple r seen to try n make things work but I can tolerate them helping us but them coming to rule us again is no no no my fred juu once ur rules by others I remain a slave in your country. The problem with white pple or colonialist is they want to take over everything even the power of that pples country but if they were to come intergrate invest leave among us without racism prejudice then why not.But always remember this guys r very evil than us.They even changed the God so he can appear white n we know clearly he was black
Mzee we hope you continue to stay healthy!! but... the leadership of Kenya from Mzee Kenyatta to Uhuru has failed Kenyans who cannot afford to Go to UK for medical checkups. If they invested fully in our health system even him Kibaki would need not go all the way to UK for just a mere checkup. Wizi and mismanagement is going to kill Kenya. Fake medication and lazy doctors is what kenyan hospitals are known best for
