President Uhuru Orders Renaming of City Stadium after Football Legend Joe Kadenge

John Wanjohi Jul 17, 2019

Nairobi’s City Stadium is set to be renamed after the late Kenyan football legend Joe Kadenge, opposition leader Raila Odinga has said.

Speaking on Tuesday, Odinga said President Kenyatta had accepted his request to rename the Stadium after Kadenge, who passed away while undergoing treatment at Meridian Hospital in Nairobi on July 7th.

Odinga, who spoke at Charter Hall in Nairobi during a fundraiser to help offset funeral expenses for the late Kadenge, said President Kenyatta has directed Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to ensure the legendary footballer is honored by renaming the stadium after him.

“Joe was a legend. And that is why I proposed to President Kenyatta on the possibility of renaming City Stadium in his honor,” said Raila.

“We both have spoken with Sonko and has agreed to fast track the process,” he added.

Kenyatta, Odinga, and Sonko contributed Sh1 million each towards Kadenge’s burial expenses. Kadenge, who died at the age of 84, will be buried on Saturday, July 20th in Soliani Village, Hamisi Sub-county, Vihiga County.
