Nairobi’s City Stadium is set to be renamed after the late Kenyan football legend Joe Kadenge, opposition leader Raila Odinga has said.
Speaking on Tuesday, Odinga said President Kenyatta had accepted his request to rename the Stadium after Kadenge, who passed away while undergoing treatment at Meridian Hospital in Nairobi on July 7th.
Odinga, who spoke at Charter Hall in Nairobi during a fundraiser to help offset funeral expenses for the late Kadenge, said President Kenyatta has directed Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to ensure the legendary footballer is honored by renaming the stadium after him.
“Joe was a legend. And that is why I proposed to President Kenyatta on the possibility of renaming City Stadium in his honor,” said Raila.
“We both have spoken with Sonko and has agreed to fast track the process,” he added.
Kenyatta, Odinga, and Sonko contributed Sh1 million each towards Kadenge’s burial expenses. Kadenge, who died at the age of 84, will be buried on Saturday, July 20th in Soliani Village, Hamisi Sub-county, Vihiga County.

Iku @Romeo 23...who are the many that deserve? Soccer is a primarily western sport. Back in the day when Kenya was Kenya, these are the men that made it formidable. The mashemeji derby is a weak version of what it was. Today Kenyan youth are committing suicide over europran soccer. While you think Kipchoge Keino is equally worthy...yes he is in marathons. Nyayo stadium was the battle field of legendary soccer...the sport that keeps Luhyas and Luos at peace. Those boys would take their disappointemnt to cheering their teams. Perhaps other tribes need to grasp the importance of sport in keeping peace. This corruption union between RV and central will not last. Then what? Find a sport where differences can be aired.
Why do we always honor people like Kadence, Munyao Kisoi after they pass on? Why are all these politicians giving a million here and there for funerals of these heroes when they die; why not elevate them to those status when they are alive? Kadenge could have gotten that from this govt. His family should have been helped instead of struggling with hospital bills... My one cent. R.I.P Kadenge
Nothing personal but a street to the stadium could have been better now that we have too many Kenyans Soccer alumni...City stadium inaweza tafutiwa a unified name..siasa inaweza ingia for ie Rugby.Kipchoge Keino ..Rudisha..quite many who too deserve a Lenyan street.or Road naming
