Nairobi MCAs Plot to Impeach Speaker Beatrice Elachi

John Wanjohi Dec 23, 2019

A section of Nairobi MCAs have threatened to impeach County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi over her refusal to convene a special sitting requested by Minority Leader David Mberia last week.

Mberia had written to Speaker Elachi asking for a special sitting where an impeachment motion against embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko would have been tabled by Minority Whip Peter Imwatok, who claims to have collected 82 signatures.

But Speaker Elachi failed to convene the session and insisted that she is waiting for an advisory opinion from the Attorney-General on the state of affairs after Governor Sonko was recently barred from accessing his office over a corruption case.

MCAs determined to impeach Governor Sonko have drafted another request for a special sitting in January and have threatened to remove Speaker Elachi if she fails to call the sitting again.

Majority Leader Charles Thuo vowed to marshal enough numbers in the assembly to reject any attempts to impeach Governor Sonko, who was charged with corruption over the alleged misappropriation of county funds amounting to Sh357 million.

Sonko, who has been away from the limelight since he was freed on a cash bail of KSh.15 million, on Saturday visited Pumwani Hospital’s maternity wing where he shared Christmas gifts with new mothers.
