Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa was on Tuesday arrested and arraigned in court over alleged fraudulent sale of a car worth Sh450,000.

Barasa appeared at Kajiado Law Courts, where he was charged with obtaining Sh450,000 from one John Irungu Mwangi pretending he was in a position to sell him a vehicle.

He also faced a second count of fraudulent disposition of mortgaged property in Kitengela on March 10th, 2017. The payments of the car, a Toyota Hiace of registration KBX 734E, had not been completed at Uwezo Microfinance Bank

But the MP through his attorney John Khaminwa argued that the sale was made on a willing buyer willing seller basis through an intermediary, accusing Mr. Mwangi of breaching the agreement. He also claimed the complainant was out to extort him under the guise of compensation.

Further, lawyer Khaminwa accused Mr. Mwangi of subjecting his client to untold mental anxiety by colluding with police officers to intimidate and frustrate him.

“The intimidating, oppressive, unreasonable and threatening conduct and behavior of the police officers is causing the MP to suffer untold mental anxiety with serious ramifications to his mental and physical state in complete contravention of his rights,” said Khaminwa.

Barasa pleaded not guilty to the two charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000. The case will be mentioned on August 27th.

Last month, Barasa moved to court to seek anticipatory bail blocking his arrest in the case.
