Tension in Eldoret over Leaflets Warning 'Outsiders' to Leave

John Wanjohi Jan 03, 2021

Police in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County have launched investigations after hate leaflets were spread in the area.

The leaflets written in Swahili warned ‘outsiders’ from other ethnic communities to vacate their land immediately.

The fliers were dropped in Kipkaren, Kapseret sub-county on Sunday morning, creating tension among locals.

“Kipkaren iko na wenyewe,” part of the text reads.

Speaking during a media briefing, Uasin Gishu police commander Ayub Githonga said officers commenced a probe to establish the source of the leaflets and bring the perpetrators to book.

He assured that security has been beefed up in the area and urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.

Local elders led by the Agikuyu Elders Association chairperson Kamunu Wa Kabari called for a thorough probe into the leaflets, warning that they are likely to antagonize the co-existence of communities living in the region.
