This Job is Difficult…No Sleep: President Uhuru Says He is Looking Forward to Retirement

John Wanjohi Jul 09, 2022

President Kenyatta has dismissed claims that he intends to extend his stay in power beyond the August 9th elections, saying that he is looking forward to his retirement.

Describing being a president as a difficult job, Kenyatta said the 10 years he has served are enough and his only desire hand over a united, cohesive and peaceful country to his successor this year.

“I don’t want to remain in power as they allege. This is a difficult job, no sleep…this house is full of challenges and ten years for me is enough. I am waiting for 9th August,” said Uhuru.

He was speaking during a non-denominational worship and prayer service with spiritual leaders from Central Kenya at State House, Nairobi on Friday.

Kenyatta used the opportunity to drum up support for the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition presidential running mate Martha Karua, describing her as a principled leader whose desire is to serve people.

"I settled on Martha Karua not because she is my friend, in fact you all know Martha and myself hardly agreed on anything there before. She even ran against me in 2012. But I settled on her because I have full confidence that our community is safe in her hands,” Kenyatta told the religious leaders.

“Despite the fact that we have never been on the same side politically with Martha, she is just and principled. It is better I follow someone who is principled. Who is just, truthful and led by the desire to serve people but not self.”

Uhuru further took a swipe at Deputy President William Ruto for engaging in what he termed as deceitful, divisive and misleading campaigns.

“You have already introduced rebellion and you are roaming across the country saying you have been wronged. A deal is between two people. If I am wrong you are also wrong. You have no right to seek leadership by lying, insults and theft,” he said.
