Gachagua: Arrest Will Not Silence Me or Shake Our Movement

Martin Olage Jul 04, 2026

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed suggestions that he could be arrested, saying detention would not intimidate him or change his political position.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with leaders from Githunguri Constituency on Saturday, Gachagua said those opposed to him wrongly believed that the threat of arrest would weaken his resolve. He said spending time in police custody was not something he feared, describing it as far less difficult than the conditions in which he grew up.

Gachagua compared modern police cells with his childhood home in Hiriga. He said police cells have electricity, toilets and security, and described them as similar to hotels. He recalled growing up in a grass-thatched house without electricity, running water or enough food, where livestock shared the same living space.

“Now someone who has come from that house, if you put him in a cell, is it a hotel or not?” he asked, prompting laughter and agreement from those attending the meeting.

He said that even if he were arrested, it would not silence him or affect the political movement he supports. “Even if they arrest me, I am just one vote,” he said, adding that his detention would not reduce the support of those backing his political agenda.

His remarks came a day after he hosted leaders from Narok County and the Maa community at his Wamunyoro residence. Gachagua described the meeting as one of the most meaningful consultations he has held since beginning a series of engagements with regional leaders.

He thanked those who attended for what he described as their insightful contributions and candid advice on the way forward. Gachagua said the possibility of arrest would not affect his commitment to his political activities or discourage his supporters.
