The Mombasa Port is currently witnessing a substantial surge in vessel traffic, reported by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to have increased transhipment activity by an impressive 300%.
This remarkable uptick in maritime operations is influenced by several key factors, including governmental measures to enhance economic activity, the festive season, and the seasonal export of cashew nuts from the neighbouring Port of Mtwara in Tanzania. As highlighted by KPA officials, there has been a significant rise in the number of vessels arriving at the port, spurred on by major shipping lines expanding their operations.
The festive season typically brings heightened demand for goods and commodities, which contributes to increased traffic. Additionally, the ongoing cashew nut export season has necessitated an influx of vessels to accommodate the increased cargo volumes. To bolster its role as a transhipment hub, the KPA has implemented strategic initiatives, including the introduction of six new feeder vessels that connect regional ports to global shipping networks.
This enhancement has effectively increased the port's capacity to manage larger volumes of traffic. Looking ahead, the KPA anticipates even greater vessel arrivals in the coming weeks. Projections indicate that between December 17 and December 28, 2024, the port is expected to accommodate a total of 41 vessels, with the likelihood of this number rising further. One prominent shipping line has augmented its service to the port, operating up to 20 vessels per month to meet the growing demand for transhipment services.
In response to the escalating traffic, KPA Managing Director Captain William Ruto has announced the implementation of various operational measures. These include collaborating with key stakeholders such as the Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (KIFWA), the Kenya Transporters Association (KTA), and Kenya Railways. This collaboration aims to streamline cargo evacuation along the northern corridor, ensuring efficient and timely delivery of goods.
The port's enhanced capacity to handle transhipment cargo solidifies its position as a crucial link in the global shipping network, supporting both local and international trade.
