Mahmoud Shaban, a former high school dropout from Kenya, has transformed his life through poultry farming.
His journey began in 2017 when he partnered with a local chicken farmer, initially engaging in commission-based sales aimed at high-end hotel clientele. This venture gradually evolved into a successful enterprise focused on free-range poultry, including chickens, ducks, and pigeons. Recognizing the lucrative demand for free-range poultry meat, Mahmoud fully embraced farming as his career.
His initial success with ducks spurred further exploration into pigeon farming, catalyzed by an influential encounter with another farmer. This new venture not only yielded economic benefits but also incorporated cultural significance, as pigeons are traditionally thought to attract good fortune and dispel negative energies. Mahmoud faced challenges, such as pigeons returning to their previous owner, which threatened the growth of his flock.
However, with support from his mentor, he received two fresh pairs of pigeons from a distant farm, which rapidly expanded to a thriving group of 120 birds. The appeal of his pigeons attracted local attention, gaining recognition for their health benefits, with some community members noting that pigeon eggs are believed to help treat pneumonia in infants.
Wealthy clients have shown significant interest, with transactions reaching Sh 4,000 for a pair of pigeons. The venture has received support from Mahmoud’s wife, Sauda, who, despite initial scepticism, has become an integral part of the operation. She plays a crucial role in ensuring the birds' well-being, including caring for them by removing harmful threads and pollutants.
Their family routine revolves around nurturing the pigeons while managing the inherent risks associated with their mobility. Historically significant, the domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica) has been documented for over 5,000 years, with early records found in Mesopotamian cuneiform and Egyptian hieroglyphs. These birds are known for their monogamous relationships and commitment to parenting and have served multiple roles for humans, from food sources and pets to messengers.
Mahmoud’s innovative approach has garnered international recognition, culminating in an opportunity in 2022 when a Canadian film company selected his home as a backdrop for the film "KIPKEMBOI." Directed by Charles Uwagbai and produced by Leonard Farlinger and Jenifer Jones, this project significantly bolstered Mahmoud’s income and enhanced his status on the global stage, further solidifying pigeons’ cultural significance in African traditions.
Reflecting on his journey, Mahmoud remains optimistic, believing that his success is intertwined with the fortune his pigeons bring. He looks forward to possible future collaborations with the filmmakers, crediting his achievements to the unique allure of pigeon rearing.
