Kenya is preparing to convene the 11th Kenya Diaspora Homecoming Convention.
The event will unite Kenyans from across the globe to advance national development initiatives. The three-day convention, scheduled for December 9-11, will center on the theme "Knowledge & Skills for Resilience and Growth," focusing on technological adaptation, climate resilience, and economic transformation. The gathering will attract a range of participants, including government representatives, private sector leaders, civil society organizations, business professionals, academics, and students. This collaborative effort supports the government's strategic vision, articulated by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, to achieve Sh 1 trillion in diaspora remittances by 2027.
The Central Bank of Kenya has already reported encouraging progress, with remittances reaching an unprecedented Sh 156 billion in the first quarter of 2024, reinforcing their critical role in sustaining household incomes and strengthening the national economy. The diaspora's contribution becomes increasingly vital as Kenya advances into the 5th Industrial Era characterized by accelerated technological innovation. The Ministry of Labour is actively developing a "National Strategy for Skills Development for Labour Migration" to better align diaspora expertise with domestic economic requirements.
Kenya Diaspora Alliance Global Chairman Dr. Shem Ochuodho emphasizes the convention's primary objective of creating a detailed action plan to maximize diaspora contributions in fostering national resilience and growth during this transformative period. The convention's agenda entails comprehensive plenary sessions, panel discussions, and workshops addressing crucial aspects of national development. These sessions will explore technological advancement's role in economic growth, climate resilience strategies, and digital-age skills development.
A highlight of the event will be the Diaspora Investment Forum, designed to showcase investment opportunities and facilitate meaningful networking among investors, entrepreneurs, and business leaders. Beyond formal proceedings, the convention will celebrate Kenya's cultural heritage through various activities. The event has garnered high-level government support with President William Ruto expected to deliver the keynote address.
