In a tragic incident that has left the Kisii community in mourning, two young individuals, Moraa and Vincent Nyambunde, were found dead in their rented apartment holding hands, days after their passing.
The circumstances surrounding their deaths have raised concerns about mental health and have highlighted the silent struggles many face. The alarming discovery was prompted by Vincent’s family, who grew increasingly distressed after multiple attempts to contact him went unanswered. Vincent’s cousin, Evans Nyambunde, recounts that the family decided to visit his workplace at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) when they could not reach him by phone, leading to their heartbreaking find.
A poignant detail reveals that Vincent had communicated with his mother shortly before his death, informing her that he was admitted to the ICU at KTRH. His sister recalls his compelling message stating, "He called my mother around 7 p.m. and told her he was in the hospital and admitted to ICU, and added that if anything happens to him, we shall be told."
The discovery has also revealed the fact that her family members were unaware of Vincent's girlfriend Moraa which has deepened the grief and confusion surrounding the incident. His brother expresses his surprise, stating, "I was not aware my brother had a girlfriend." Vincent, 28, served as a medical intern at KTRH and was recognized for his academic achievements and leadership abilities. A graduate of Egerton University in 2020, he had previously attended Nyambaria Boys High School in Kisii County, where he excelled as school captain and achieved an A grade in his KCSE exams.
Friends and former classmates remember him fondly, with Edward Nyakang'o, his deputy captain at Nyambaria High, urging the community to honour Vincent's legacy through contributions to his funeral. Describing Vincent, Edward states, "Vincent was a bright, hardworking young man whose dedication to service and humanity stood as an inspiration to all who knew him. His promising future was tragically cut short, but his legacy of excellence and commitment to others will always remain with us."
Reports indicate that Moraa, who travelled from Brooklyn City, United States, to meet Vincent, was reportedly committed to building a life with him in Kenya after separating from the father of her child. This revelation adds complexity to the narrative, as many in their circle were unaware of the depth of their relationship. The couple's tragic end was discovered when neighbours reported a foul odour emanating from their apartment, prompting police intervention.
Upon arrival, authorities found the bodies, with Moraa’s showing advanced signs of decomposition. Colleagues at KTRH reported that Vincent was last seen alive on November 27.
