On December 7, 2024, the University of North Georgia (UNG) hosted its Fall 2024 Commencement Ceremony, where Charlotte Wanjiku Sims, a Kenyan-American and cum laude graduate, served as the student speaker.
Earning a degree in Business Administration with a minor in Korean, Charlotte's academic journey reflects her cultural pride and commitment to global engagement. Born to Daniel and Joan Sims in the United States, Charlotte was influenced by her mother’s career as an Accounting Manager and former teacher, which inspired her passion for education.
Her grandparents, Nahashon and Damaris Kaniaru, also played a significant role in instilling a strong sense of her Kenyan heritage. In her commencement address, Charlotte expressed sincere gratitude towards her family and mentors. She highlighted themes of resilience and perseverance, stating, "There is no short path to greatness, and the road to success has no shortage of sharp stones or potholes."
This message struck a chord with her fellow graduates, encouraging them to view challenges as opportunities for growth. Charlotte's decision to pursue a minor in Korean marked a pivotal moment in her academic career, igniting her interest in teaching English in South Korea. She is currently working towards securing a Fulbright grant to further this ambition.
Looking ahead, Charlotte acknowledges the challenges and opportunities that await her peers. She urges them to celebrate their resilience, declaring, "Hold those days with pride. They are a sign of your resilience." She also extends her appreciation to the faculty, mentors, and families who supported the graduates throughout their educational journeys.
Concluding her speech, Charlotte conveyed a message of optimism for the future: "I cannot wait to see how far you go. Congratulations to each and every one of us—here’s to the future."
Her words resonated with the audience, who responded with enthusiastic applause.
