In a landmark initiative aimed at expanding global opportunities for Kenyan professionals, the first cohort of the Mhandisi Majuu programme has officially arrived in Greece.
Organized by Kenya's State Department for Diaspora Affairs (SDDA), the programme is designed to connect skilled Kenyan engineers with esteemed international positions. Upon arrival, the 16 engineers received a warm welcome from Ms. Vicky Pantazopoulou, Kenya’s Honorary Consul to the Hellenic Republic.
They are set to assume various engineering roles within a leading Greek firm, marking a significant opportunity to elevate and showcase Kenyan talent on a global stage. The journey commenced with a send-off ceremony at the SDDA office in Nairobi on January 13, attended by key figures, including Hon. Esther Passaris, the Nairobi County Women Representative.
This event brought together family, friends, and stakeholders, identifying the departure as a crucial moment in Kenya's strategy to engage its diaspora. Ambassador Hellen Gichuhi, Secretary for Diaspora Welfare and Partnerships, emphasized the importance of this initiative in projecting Kenya as a hub for professional talent.
"This milestone demonstrates our position as a hub of professional talent,” she stated, urging the engineers to foster mutual support and establish networks in their new environment.
Hon. Passaris provided an inspiring message during the ceremony, encouraging the engineers to exemplify diligence, integrity, and the core values reflective of the Kenyan spirit. Preparation for this international assignment included a pre-departure session that equipped participants with cultural insights to assist their integration into Greek society.
Ms. Irene Karari, Director and Head of the Skills and Expertise Division, reiterated the programme's goal of aligning Kenyan professionals with high-value opportunities globally. Family members and representatives from partner agencies gathered to bid farewell to this trailblazing group, underscoring a collective effort to enhance the socio-economic welfare of Kenyans abroad.
The Mhandisi Majuu initiative contributes to a broader strategy aimed at tapping into global markets, further establishing Kenya's international presence in the labour sector. This initiative aligns with the State Department’s Strategic Plan 2023-2027, which outlines comprehensive frameworks dedicated to strengthening diaspora welfare and partnerships.
The success of this inaugural cohort is anticipated to serve as a guiding light for future program participants, reinforcing Kenya’s ongoing investment in creating international career pathways for its citizens.
