Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has cautioned Kenyan job seekers that drug use, particularly cannabis, is a significant barrier to securing employment abroad.
Speaking at a recruitment event in Roysambu, Mutua emphasized the stringent zero-tolerance policies of foreign nations toward drug abuse, which he said disqualifies numerous Kenyan applicants. Mutua says that drug use not only tarnishes Kenya's international reputation but also directly results in the rejection of otherwise qualified candidates.
"No country wants a drug addict or anyone with drugs in their system. They are simply not welcome anywhere in the world," he asserts.
His remarks came during a recruitment drive aimed at filling positions in sectors such as nursing, driving, and culinary arts. Beyond the issue of drug use, Mutua has addressed the broader challenge of employability among Kenyans.
He notes that while Kenya possesses a substantial labour force, many job seekers lack the requisite skills and qualifications demanded by international employers, leading to missed opportunities. Mutua urges potential candidates to proactively invest in relevant training programs and certifications to enhance their skills and meet global standards.
"The jobs are there if you are qualified," he states, encouraging a commitment to personal and professional development.
