Lupita Nyong’o has become the latest actress to accuse powerful mogul producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment.
The Oscar award winner says that the producer sexually harassed her at a time she was struggling to establish her name in the multi-billion dollar film industry.
In an opinion piece published in New York Times , the "12-Years-a-Slave" actress said she met Harvey at an awards ceremony in Berlin, Germany in 2011, when she was yet to clear her studies at the Yale School of Drama. Lupita said that a friend introduced him to her as “the most powerful producer in Hollywood.”
“As an aspiring actress, I was of course eager to meet people in the industry but cautious about strangers, and the intentions of men in general… A woman who was a producer herself cautiously advised me to ‘keep Harvey in your corner.’ She said: ‘He is a good man to know in the business, but just be careful around him. He can be a bully.’”
Harvey then invite her to his home to watch a movie with his family and thats where the drama began.
“I settled in for the film, but about 15 minutes in, Harvey came for me, saying he wanted to show me something… Harvey led me into a bedroom — his bedroom — and announced that he wanted to give me a massage. I thought he was joking at first. He was not. For the first time since I met him, I felt unsafe. I panicked a little and thought quickly to offer to give him one instead: It would allow me to be in control physically, to know exactly where his hands were at all times.”
“…He agreed to this and lay on the bed. I began to massage his back to buy myself time to figure out how to extricate myself from this undesirable situation. Before long he said he wanted to take off his pants. I told him not to do that and informed him that it would make me extremely uncomfortable. He got up anyway to do so and I headed for the door, saying that I was not at all comfortable with that. “If we’re not going to watch the film, I really should head back to school,” I said.”
This was followed by another meeting months later at a restaurant and it was no different from their first meeting, but, this time, he took one more steps, Lupita said.
“‘Let’s cut to the chase. I have a private room upstairs where we can have the rest of our meal.’ I was stunned. I told him I preferred to eat in the restaurant. He told me not to be so naïve. If I wanted to be an actress, then I had to be willing to do this sort of thing. He said he had dated Famous Actress X and Y and look where that had gotten them… “With all due respect, I would not be able to sleep at night if I did what you are asking, so I must pass,” I replied,” she writes saying that he threatened her afterwards.
“I don’t know about your career, but you’ll be fine,” he said. It felt like both a threat and a reassurance at the same time; of what, I couldn’t be sure.”
It was after thus that Lupita issued a red card on Harvey and vowed never to work with him again.
“Now that we are speaking, let us never shut up about this kind of thing. I speak up to make certain that this is not the kind of misconduct that deserves a second chance. I speak up to contribute to the end of the conspiracy of silence."
More than 40 Hollywood actresses have in the recent weeks come out to accuse Weinstein of sexual harassment , sexual assault, and rape, incidents they say happened to as far back as 1980.
The list includes such A-list actresses as Angeline Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mira Sorvino, Ashley Judd, and Rose McGowan.
Following the revelations, Weinstein, 65, was fired from his production company, The Weinstein Company. He has also been expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

There many times that I feel ashamed as a man and wonder what I would do If I were a woman being sexually harassed by men.
We need to develop a system where women feel comfortable and safe 24/7- 365/366. Just as the policemen in the USA in many cities are now required to have a camera on duty, we should ask our sisters (women) to carry a hidden recorder where we can access their daily challenges from men and find immediate solutions. No one chose what gender they were going to be! It is therefore mandatory that a system of women safety has to be instituted and executed all over the world.
Long live our sisters all over the world without any form of sexual harassment from their rude brothers!
Heh Imara , now we can agree on one thing. It is true but these things have a very thin line though. How do you sometimes define compliments and harassment depending on different cultures? Physical abuse is easy to quantify and to proof but the other kind of he -said she- said and there is no physical proof, that trends in a murky water because both side can present their case convincingly and that is what was so hard to proof in Bill Cosby case and he walked. Even this example here; when Wenstein made a massage suggestion, why not take off, why stay around for a 30+ year old, that is code for I want to sleep with you. There are systems even here in US but when you walk in to such scenario of Lupita and you walked in with pure motives then you can call but if you want favors and flirt a little just because, well..... it is a 2 way street
Also when a grown woman ( not little girls) sense a man is making suggestions and that is so easy to get into my radar , I do not know about other women but when that is clear , you excuse yourself and leave. If its business, conduct it in a public arena; coffee shops etc and in daylight or well lit restaurant if you have to have dinner and do not drink alcohol if you are the type who cannot make informed decisions after a glass of wine. I'm not excusing some men behavior but we as women we have to look inwards . Some women who got it know they can entice some men and they do so to further their goals hoping they come out unscathed and in these holywood cases, seems like that was the scenario

Lupita is a Hero. A courageous educated woman. She offered to give her story. A sad story. Sexual harassment does not require fine details. You don't know how many women in Kenya, educated or others who got their jobs or promotions through sexual favors. Others even offer it for cash or financial support. The point is the star Lupita was aexually harassed. Give her every support for you don t know the psychological effects she is going through.
@Ougi..to answer your question, it happens all the time in the world, mostly where there is a power imbalance. I would argue that in Kenya, this is rampant with younger girls looking for jobs, etc..Some of these people in high powered enviable positions do sell their souls literally to get where they are. For Lupita, grown she may have been, lakini I would imagine she has had to fight twice as much to get where she is. We can't take away her achievements in the name of this exploiter, for that is basically what he was to all those women coming out now. Kudos for sharing Lupita, that takes some balls. Hope some young aspiring actress will read this and learn that your body is sacred and you don't need it contaminated by dirty old men (or women) to get where you want. Your talent will. When one has a young daughter or sister, you should not scoff at this misfortune, as they could be the victims tomorrow. Just saying.
Did she really have to fight hard for where she is , maybe , maybe not ask Taraji P. Henson, Angela Basset, Viola Davis,Regina King,Cicely Tyson, Pam Grier and the list goes and on of all the African ( black) American women who have been passed over and better IMHO than Lupita. My basic point was that women are exploited the world over and as a black woman, I know for a fact we have to prove ourselves twice as much as our counterparts. Of course their those who take a short cut and sell their souls, but if that's the choice she made, then that's a choice she has to live with. Power is an instrument that has a spell like no other. Some repel it well and some give in an get exploited or just live a living nightmare. This guy has immense power to allow his deeds go on for this long.

The dude is the victim here. In this prostitution. The women sold their bodies to further their careers in Hollywood. The dude helped them to get what they wanted.
